A Conversation With... Mathilde Lacombe
By Abigail Pyke
Mathilde Lacombe is an absolute force. Multi-business entrepreneur, mother, and an all-around icon in the making, Mathilde is someone we admire greatly for her dedication and vision. Previously having founded Joliebox (which then became Birchbox) when noticing a gap in the market, she is now co-founder of her newest venture: Aime Skincare, which makessupplements that promote a healthy and effortless glow, starting from within. We caught up with Mathilde ahead of our London event with Aime at Liberty to chat motherhood, inspiration, and balance.
Q: You currently split your life between two places – what do you like about each?
A: I live in Reims and work in Paris. I like the energy of Paris and the calm of Reims where my family is.
Q: Having children of your own now, looking back, what is your fondest memory from childhood?
A: I'd say the summer holidays. When we had 2 full months of break. It was such a period of innocence and peace. I'm the eldest of 4 and we have so much good memories from all these summers together.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
A: Busy! Between having 3 kids and running a business I don't have a lot of down time! I always feel like I have several days in one day. But I love it and wouldn't have it any other way.
Q: Where did you find the inspiration to begin Aime?
A: My own experience of having skin issues. My rosacea started when I first got pregnant 7 years ago. I was working in the beauty industry already but couldn't manage to find something that worked. When I finally understood that my skin issues were actually coming from my gut I started making changes and seeing results. I knew I had to share it with other women and that's how Aime was born.
Q: How do you balance being an entrepreneur and being a mother?
A: I don't know if I balance --I just accept the fact that I can't be perfect at everything. My kids are my priorities. If they are healthy and happy then everything is okay to me!
Q: How do you switch off and take time for yourself?
A: I try to do sport (Barreshape and pilates) at least 2 times a week. That’s one hour just for me. It gives me energy and lots of ideas. Every 3 months I try and book a massage or facial but often I will cancel last minute because something popped up in my calendar!
Q: Of your accomplishments, what are you most proud of?
A: My family.
Q: Who is a woman that inspires you?
A: Every working mother is a hero and inspiration to me.
Mathilde’s Edit
Mathilde says: “The Charlotte is really chic. I could see myself wearing this after I'm done with my Barreshape class and going into meetings!”
